Angry $199 lease is a lie on the Fiat 500e, its 22% more!

    Hi There,

I was very excited that my 500e arrived at my dealer Fiat of Burlingame yesterday July 16 but that quickly turned to disappointment and anger when the dealer placed the lease papers in front of me. Months ago I put a deposit on the base model (orange on white with no sunroof or sport package) and asked for the $199 lease but the dealer said it was $263.50! Adding tax to the $199 lease gets it to $216.16 but this was $47.34 higher. I took issue with this and the dealer used their usual misleading monthly payment language 'it's only $47 more' to which I replied but that's an outrageous 22% increase that's the same as jacking the price of the car from $33 to $40k!

I told this dealer the $199 is clearly false advertising and that he took my deposit on the $199 deal to which he replied that you might have told us you wanted the $199 deal but that is not on your deposit receipt. I then said its advertised on the Fiat website in bold letters and he then drew my attention to a little pop up window that only appears when you mouse over a tiny + which says among other things "Offer requires dealer contribution". Of course they refused to make that contribution saying that 'the car is sold out and I have a waiting list, so you want it or not?' I'm pretty sure that no dealers are 'contributing' so no one can get the $199 price so it is a lie and false advertising.

The sad thing is that $264 is still good lease on a great $33k car and this nasty deceitful practice just unnecessarily kills much of the goodwill and brand equity the car's launch created.

    Regards,
    Trent

I called Fiat Customser Service line to inquire about this 'mark up' crap. Fiat said $199 is the manufacturer suggested lease price and dealers can change the price as they wish. So frustrated!
Called my dealer. They still don't have the delivery date yet. Asked if they will mark up the price. Was told that they haven't gone that far yet since the cars are still not here. For now, they still honor the $199 deal. We shall see...
I am thinking to go test drive the Chevrolet Spark EV although I hate how the car looks. I am just upset about how cheap and lack of integrity of these Fiat dealers. Not just about money. I don't want to give business to dealers like that. Well... Still debating with myself what should I do...

Did they take your credit app when you left your deposit? Probably not. The little catch-all is 'for qualified buyer's'. Even with good credit many buyer's dont' qualify for the lowest lease rate. Check! It could be something as little as too many credit checks within too short a period of time.

I finally got the real numbers on my lease for a 500e with sunroof and white interior - both options that I did not want, by the way - and was told that my real monthly payment will be $287 (including taxes and fees). I'm sure this is what will happen at every dealership!

They didn't run my credit when I put down the deposit. I think many dealers just simply refuse to have any dealer contribution to make the $199 deal happen. I know which car I order, as I have the build sheet. If they push me to have extra equippment e.g. Sunroof or e-sport package, I will just walk away. I will consider around $250. If it's $300... won't do it!

All models say "with dealer contribution." What that means is the lease cash (kinda like a rebate on a purchase) that is offered by either FIAT of the lending company the lease is written with (in this case, I believe that is Chrysler Capital).

Kane99 is on the right track with the question above: How much did you put down? The down payment is what throws customers off on a lease. If you follow everything it tells you too on the website, it will be the advertised price BEFORE TAXES every time. Customers either don't want to put the money down, or they want more equipment than the advertised specifications.

Spyder- If you qualify for a lease, the rate is the rate. It's not like a purchase, where the rate depends on credit. The entire lease approval depends on credit. Normally have to be north of 720 credit score.

Tpoltron- Is the MSRP on your E $32,600, or is it more? If it's more, you'd be surprised how much the lease payment can go up for just a few $100 to $1000. Again, it's not like a purchase where every $1k increases your payment about $20/mo.
If everything with your purchase is IDENTICAL to the requirements in the ad, then there is something fishy going on. I hope you get it figured out.

Another thought: since we don't have eCars here, are there any extra fees or taxes for those specific vehicles???

    Thanks,
    Allen

I played around with the payment calculator in Fiat's website. If you purchase the base model $32,600, you can only get the $199 deal with dealer discount of $1500. As aarmstrong27 said, it should be the rebate from Fiat to the dealer. If dealer chooses to keep the rebate and not to contribute anything, that will be no $199 deal. The monthly payment will be $241 plus tax.

In answer to aarmstrong27, upon pickup the dealer also told me the orange color and white interior are both paid options (also a surprise to me) but they raised the price 2.7% and certainly don't justify the 22% hike.

Percentage has nothing to do with it. What's the dollar figure? I picture of the window sticker would be even better.
