  1. 500 madness piggy back

Fiat 500 Engine and Technical Discussion
Yes and yes. Not often. Once in 6-8 months or so. Usually a CEL results. Clear it with an OBD2 adapter and continue. I had to unplug the ECM and use the bypass plug that came it before I could clear the error once. It's just the nature of ECMs - it's a cheat, and sometimes you get caught...
  2. What's wrong with this picture?

Fiat 500 Engine and Technical Discussion
Believe me, I was just as skeptical as you when I noticed. I would never have expected a manufacturing problem. But it's not a packing problem, or a part labeling problem. Both were packed and labelled with matching part numbers - correct for the 500, mentioned in the original post above. If...
  3. What's wrong with this picture?

Fiat 500 Engine and Technical Discussion
No - I got both left and right. But Koni just built them wrong. Neither strut can fit correctly on either side. This should make it more obvious: As far as I can work out, they welded the whole "collar" part (at the base) for the left strut onto the right strut, and vice versa. The...
  4. What's wrong with this picture?

Fiat 500 Engine and Technical Discussion
Excited to get started on a day in the garage, I had all the tools layed out, car jacked up, ready to rock. Then I ran into a small obstacle that spoiled my fun. Can you spot the problem? I had the old strut off and the spring and strut mount on the new Koni strut before I noticed. Same...
  5. Turbos

    Fiat 500 General Discussion Forum
Probably the camber differences would necessitate different steering stops and thus wider turning radius, I suppose. Thanks for the link.
  6. Is there a better paint color in the world?

    Fiat 500 Pictures
I remember that - I think it was model-specific to the special "Cobra" models. The FCA version is much much more subtle than that snakey looking Mustang paint. That was radical for a factory paint. Like a TVR or something.
  7. Turbos

I've always wondered about that. Is there really a difference between 500T and Abarth? If so, what is physically causing that difference?
  8. Turbos

    Fiat 500 General Discussion Forum
It all depends on what you want - and where you are. Mostly Americans in this forum, so the answers so far are accurate for N.American models. If you're in Europe, you have a lot more options including an Abarth model range (now all called 595 or 695) that starts at 145hp and goes to 180hp...
  9. Exploits in Italy

    Fiat 500 Pictures
Pre-facelift 595 Turismo, between Torino and French border. They didn't have a 500 for me this trip - so I got this old thing. Abbey of San Galgano, Tuscany Okay, not a rental, but how about this old timer? San Gimignano. Awesome 595, and well used. San Gimignano. I've seen this...
  10. Exploits in Italy

    Fiat 500 Pictures
I'm traveling to Italy a few times a year for business. We have an office near Torino and I usually stay for a week to 10 days at a time. For the last few years I have been renting various 500s from Hertz, who carries the Abarth models as well. So, on the weekend I log an average of 1500km...
  11. Why buy a 500T?

    Fiat 500 General Discussion Forum
These days, every new (N.American) 500 has the same Multi-Air Turbo engine and the usual accessory and trim differences, so I wanted to reflect on the short-lived marketing-driven sales flop that was the "FIAT 500 Sport Turbo." What's with the name? Why did it exist? Who buys one? It can...
  12. Climate control question

Fiat 500 Engine and Technical Discussion
Does anyone know how to change the default settings for climate control (on ACC-equipped cars)? It's annoying that it does not remember your last settings on anything but temp, after an ignition shutdown/restart. Specifically, recirculate is ON by default. Fan speed is all the way down (weird...
  13. Coolant level too low? (coolant leak repair done a month ago)

Fiat 500 Engine and Technical Discussion
I know color is not definitive as an indication of coolant chemistry, but green OAT? Was the service done by an independent or a dealer? N.American Fiats are typically orange (older) or purple (newer) OAT coolant. So, going by the book, wrong coolant chemistry in an engine that wasn't...
  14. Is there a better paint color in the world?

    Fiat 500 Pictures
OEM color, Verde Azzurro (Green-Blue). Chrysler's name was better: Fathom Blue Pearlescent. OEM paint code PPS. Great color, but it couldn't improve the looks of the Dodge Journey.

Those are my outgoing BFG G-Force Comp2 A/S on the OEM sport wheels, 205/45R16. They've been great fun. Stickiest A/S I've ever had, but 35K and they're done. Replacing next week with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ on the forged hyper-black Abarth wheels, 205/40R17. This paint color (and my...
