$19 TO SAVE $2K ONBOARD CHARGER?

EDIT: IT'S NOT JUST LIGHTNING! It's also any 2-second power outage or anyone turning the breaker on! Skip to post #19 (click here) for the $19 link.

Original Post: Someone reported OBC failure after being plugged in with lightning nearby.
Now someone else seems to have OBC failure after just cycling the breaker with the car plugged in but not even charging!

So USE A SURGE PROTECTOR !!!

I don't know how to do that with 240V charging, but nearly nobody needs that, since 110V & a surge protector will fully recharge an above-average daily drive during 8 hours of work of sleep.

Now that I’ve upgraded my surge protection, I’m thinking it may be worthwhile to also use a voltage regulator like the one linked below. I’ve always used a similar unit on my A/V equipment and I notice it’s quite active during the summer months when the power grid is stressed by AC use. This may be overkill, but in theory there are power anomalies that could be harmful and wouldnt be stopped by a surge protector.

2 questions:

1) Is it "also", not "instead of" a surge protector because the voltage regulator itself needs protection from voltage spikes?

2) The unit in the link says "1200VA" but for the OEM chargecord, 120V x 12A = 1440VA, so that wouldn't work, right?
Good points. I would have to find one with a higher VA rating. With my A/V setup, I have the regulator plugged into the wall and a surge protector plugged into the regulator. The regulator has its own internal surge protection, but not as much as the above linked APC or Amazon units.

I may have been one of the first to experience this on this board. Happened almost two yrs ago and I did have a power outage the night the obcm died.
I always suspected that was the culprit but the fiat tech assured me that wasn’t it. It was just old. Now I don’t know mine was old lost of charging cycles but
After reading on here surges in power seem to
Affect the obcm could have been a combo and using a 19 dollar protector seems like a great idea. Especially if one has an out side plug to access….would alleviate the fire concerns.

Ya, a surge protector could reduce fire risk by keeping the super-hot OEM wall plug away from the wall. Indoors you could put them in a metal bucket or ceramic flowerpot if needed.

THANKS @Hmbfiat !!!

Either way, it means every single one of the 4 OBC failures that I can recall seem to have been from voltage spikes:
  1. 12/17/21 @Hmbfiat reports that the car drives even though it shows plugged in when it isn't, but the OBC died right after the power came on while the car was plugged into 240V (click here).
  2. 7/22/22 @DD500E reports OBC died right after some nearby lightning while the car was plugged into 240V (click here).
  3. 5/16/23 I get a PM from Fresno Ca that the car drives even though it shows plugged in when it isn't, but it just won't charge, starting right after turning the breaker on while the car was plugged into 240V.
  4. 5/19/23 @ekvals reports from Norway that the car drives even though it shows plugged in when it isn't, but it just won't charge, starting right after the breaker was turned on while the car was plugged into 230V (click here).
