Aloha from Maui. Our 2016E with 31k miles which we've had and loved for over three years without any issues started making a kind of dark, humming, jet plane kind of noise (at first I wondered if it was a wheel bearing) yesterday and we noticed it went away when we turned off the AC on the dash (therefore not a wheel bearing). Today I drove the car and although the blower is fine the AC has now stopped cooling the air. Haven't noticed any leaks. The outside temperature reading displayed on the dash seems accurate, so doesn't that negate it being an issue with the temperature sensor under the rear view mirror?
Suffered sticker shock when I saw a new compressor has an MSRP of over $6k and retail of about $4200! Can only imagine the dealer would happily add another $2k to replace it and there are probably only three 500E Fiats on all of Maui, so likely no experience at the one dealership option here. Thankfully I found a lot of used compressors (some with really low miles) in junkyards around the country for around $300. Also someone suggested that they had the same problem and it turned out to be "some valves" and the AC evaporator but still cost them $2400 from their dealer. Ouch!
What's the prognosis? Best idea for repairing? What's the step by step diagnosis procedure? Could it just be a recharge of the AC system? Also, is it true that the AC cools the battery and therefore driving it without the AC working is not wise? The temps here are in the 80s and 90s if that matters. Mahalo for any experience, tips or advice you can share with an AC that stopped working.
