anyone had a camshaft failure? I had a customers' car come in this past week and #2 intake lobe was cracked and loose on the cam tube. The dealer parts guy told me they hadn't seen a single cam failure yet

How was it running and where your valves damaged ? And did the valves make contacts ? I have the number #2 lobe as well cracked

Yes, I have had cam failure on number one cylinder. Putting in new cam and while were at it, a new belt, water pump, etc.
Its a 2012 500 Sport with 54K on the motor. It's been a great car though.

From what I can see the cam lobes appear to have had heavy pressure placed on them. The wear marks indicate that the problem may stem from a valve train problem, valve stem binding due to lack of oil/cooling causing the cam to work harder to try to open the valves.
I had an MB 450 SL, all four cams had to be replaced due to poor heat treating of the cam, which flattened the lobes. The cost was $0.00, MB claimed it was a manufacturing problem, good news.
