Got the temperature warning light to flash on briefly. I accomplished this by going down a very steep hill in third gear (I disdain the use of brakes). The engine was at running at no more than 3500 rpm. Then I did gently apply the brakes and it went off right away.

So if this happens, don't flip out. There's no analog gauge that can tell you the temp is increasing gradually, so this is how you find out, apparently. The digital display didn't jump to the next segment when this happened.

My car did the same thing going down a steep hill. Two different times on the same hill. My car is an automatic though. Why would a car heat up going down a hill?

Yeah, I've seen this a couple of time too. Suddenly, the temp gauge goes to 100%, the CEL comes on (with a beep, I think) as well as the Cruise Control light, and a couple of seconds later, everything is back to normal. I may have been coasting down a slight downhill both times, but cannot say for sure...
