Friday, i had a rear muffler delete pipe made up as a prototype sample to test out the sound and resonance levels prior to making a batch. The final part will be made from 409 stainless steel, and clamp right in the stock location in front of the rear axle, with a polished tip. It will remove 8lbs from the car and gives a seat in the pants performance improvement.

stock is inaudible so 1000 percent? Seriously, I could not even hear my engine before this mod. I would stall out at lights because i could not gauge the rpms relative to the clutch pedal. Now I can...

I have a 5 speed sport. the exhaust is audible. but that competiZione exhaust sound is what I'm shooting for. prob is its $900.
I honestly can't imagine paying $900 for an exhaust setup on the 500. The existing pipe is more than large enough for the engine, so I don't see any advantage to changing the whole system. A free flow Magnaflow (I'm sure there are others as well) can be had for $75 and if you want more sound you can just remove the resonator too. I left my resonator alone, and paid a local shop retail price for a Magnaflow and the bend a new pipe from the axle joint for under $175. I'm sure removing the resonator and welding in a straight pipe there wouldn't add all that much to the price. Thats a fraction of the cost of of many of the systems (even axle backs) I see for sale, and it doesn't sound at all ricey.

I'm sure Zonker's pipe only solution is a pretty nice price/impact solution as well, I'd just be concerned that without a muffler that too much high end noise in the final exhaust note. Will have to wait for a high quality external sound clip from him ;)

Too true about the oem pipe diameter. 2" is plenty for a 1.4 liter motor. In fact it's bigger than the oem diameter on my Escort Zx2. that system is a 1 7/8" diameter, and when that system is traded out for a 2 1/2" system, the stock ZX2 motor starts to lose valuable torque.

The 500's under car resonator seems to be a pretty low restriction piece. It appears to be a straight through design so the baffling is kept at a minimum, and it does a great job of keeping the NVH low even when the oem muffler is completely removed.
