That is not the top of the "gas tank valve assembly". That is the top of the fuel pump. It is a white colored plastic. So when you whack it- be cautious- I used the handle of the phillips screwdriver to tap it "smartly" 20 to 30 times. I think there is a some kind of a venting valve in the fuel pump that may have been stuck- because the tapping worked. No more issues when filling the tank. There are you tube videos on this issue.
