Long Battery Life Setting?

Is there a "Long Battery Life" setting for the 500E as there is on a Leaf or a Tesla? It charges the battery to only 80% unless you know you're going to need the longer range so as not to stress the battery.

Just out of curiosity, what is your goal?

The assumption is that if you have no other issues with the car, that the battery will degrade over time and the car will lose "range".

If there is a difference in how quickly range diminishes over time based upon charging habits, at what point is the car no longer useable for you?

My guess is that before the battery degrades to the point where it can no longer hold an 80 percent charge, you will have bigger issues like no factory service available or very costly repairs when out of warranty.

I know it is unsolicited "advice", but hey...its the Internet...

Drive it. Charge it. Don't worry about it. Cross the "car is no longer good" bridge when you get to it.

You are welcome. For nothing. :)

My goal it to take as good care of my car as possible to retain value and usability. I have friends with Leafs and Teslas and they don't fully charge their batteries except in specific circumstances, their car manufacturers and they believing this extends battery life. I wondered if there was an option to do the same for Fiat 500Es. If there was an easy way to extend the value and battery life of your car would you not do it? I usually hold on to cars for 10+ years, so I try to take care of them.

The Leaf's biggest issue is battery degradation, because Nissan in their infinite wisdom didn't include thermal management for the battery.
Our 500e's DO use thermal battery management, which will greatly extend it's service life.

Keep in mind that the car's electronics don't fill the battery to the absolute maximum, and they also don't drain them to the absolute minimum...but as a pure EV it will use more of the available state of charge than a typical plug-in hybrid.
The state of charge is kept in a "sweet spot" to maximize battery life.
Proof:
If you drive until there's zero range, you won't be able to put 24kwh into the battery, even though that's the stated capacity.

Keep in mind:
The battery pack in the 500e is actually comprised of many, many smaller cells.
The entire pack won't fail at once, but certain cells may..and these can be replaced, there are already companies out there specializing in Hybrid/EV cell replacement...much less $$$ than replacing the entire pack.

Absolutely agree with robbobster. Heat is the enemy of the EV battery packs. Charging is only an issue when it is producing excessive heat. Fiat's thermal management is superb, so nothing to worry about. Also, since heat is the enemy, the absence of a DC fast charge option for the 500e is a blessing in disguise (i.e. for anyone planning to purchase and keep the car). There is evidence that limiting charge rate to 7200W (Level 2) will help maximize battery life. With the liquid cooling I'm expecting the 500e battery to be serviceable for quite a while. By the time cells start to fail, I'm thinking (like robbobster) that some re-builders will step up and new cell prices will come down too.

There is a former Bosch guy named Jim Hagerman who frequents the Google+ 500e section who worked on testing and validation of the 500e, and he said that they used Level 3 DC charging during all of their road testing, so that they could get the cars back on the road ASAP, so technically it has been done on this car before.
He is also highly critical of the quality of the control software developed by the Chrysler engineers for the 500e, claiming that he showed them multiple code flaws that they ignored or refused to address.

That's what made me a little nervous about the software update I got yesterday. I got my 500e in November and it's been flawless so far. A few days ago the radio reception on all bands got intermittent and they found a bad connection in the base of the antenna. They replaced that, but also did a drivetrain software update. Hopefully my previously fine software didn't get updated to anything buggy...
