what do you lose by swapping out the Blue and Me?

I'm less than thrilled the Blue and Me these days; it seems like it doesn't work with many modern phones and the USB media stuff is still pretty flaky...(heck, I've gone back to using my freakin' Zune through the aux port). Anyway I'm thinking about swapping to a simple JVC head unit that supports voice and text and Pandora and all that stuff, but I want to keep being able to use the steering wheel buttons and don't want a microphone or random wire out in the open.

So what won't work anymore if I ditch the Blue & Me?

My Blue and Me has worked perfect for 3.5 years. I've have been using Apple products, with many updates. The only 3 things you going to lose, is one. the hand free phone. Controlling the media device, from a optional Tom tom navigation. If you have that. If you go with after market sound system. You might want to look for ones, that have a adaptor, so you can use your OEM steering wheel controls. I love those controls.

#1 With the adapters you can retain the button function and mics can usually be hidden easily enough to retain the OEM look. With the tech contained within the head units you really don't lose anything and depending on what you spend you will actually gain a lot more functionality.

#2 Brian mentioned his setup...in person it is insane and will shake the car to pieces...literally if you wished it so. :D Unless you have the skills it's probably best to hire someone and have them redo the entire system for the optimal outcome but you could just do the head unit and likely be okay with things.

I have read of the flashing issues but I think it was determined that when the proper harness is used this will not occur. Sadly I do not recall at the moment which works but I think troy_audi0 or Norcall SS stated they had modded without issues so checking with one of them should give you the right parts.

I just bought a brand new iPhone 6. It paired perfect with Blue and Me. Same with my old 3G, and 4Gs phones. Press VR button. Prompt the VR, comand settings, then pairing, got a 4 digit Blue tooth number, punched it into the phone, then copy phone director. Works perfect. My car was made in 2011. I run a really old iPod in the USB slot, glove department. My OEM Blue and Me Tom Tom, can control it. Playlist, artist, album, etc.

I'd do what Brian said just up grade, your amp, and speakers. Give Crutchfield Audio, a ring. They can also advise you with aftermarket systems. Flashing lights, just a myth.

Good luck with your choices.
