OK finally some good news!!! I went to the dealer this morning, and lucky me they one tire in inventory. Whew lucky me! They changed my tire, and my oil leak is completely fixed. There was a lot of risidual oil still remaining. They gave it a really good cleaning and I drove for an hour and it's perfect. I think my luck is turning for the better. I do love this car and I am really happy to get all this behind me. I will be buying an extra tire to have on hand just in case! This is a great car, I just had a little bit of bad luck. Thanks to everybody who chimed in an listened to me. This is a great group.

Glad to hear the problem has been satisfactorily resolved!

I had exactly the same problem: burning oil or exhaust smell from the moment I took delivery of my 2012 Fiat 500 on Sept 30/11 until one week ago. The burning smell appeared after my car had warmed up and when it was idling at a stop. The dealership refused to acknowledge that there was a problem because they could not replicate it. Chrysler-Fiat refused to acknowledge the problem as well and just suggested that I take it to another dealership. The worst customer experience I have ever had with any product I have ever purchased - from both the dealership, Downsview Chrysler in Toronto, Canada and Chrysler itself.

I managed to get the problem fixed through no help from Downsview Chrysler or Chrysler-Fiat, but through dogged persistence in not letting Downsview Chrysler off the hook. I drove the car for 9 months and kept on checking my car in for repair of the burning smell, each time getting brushed off until last week I dropped the car off and said I didn't want it back until it was fixed.

They found an oil leak which required the replacement of five upper exhaust manifolds to the cylinder head studs (reference on the invoice was "Performed Star Case S1109000025"). Fortunately this major repair was covered by the warranty.

The problem has been eliminated and I have been driving my car for the past week with air from the HAVC system that smells like roses. What a pleasure. But my next car will not be a Fiat because of the way I was treated.

Sorry to hear of your issues but glad you got the problem resolved, I'd be curious why it now smells like roses though...might have to get that looked into now. :p Seriously though welcome to the forums and I hope from here things go well for you!

My Fiat has only 600 miles on it and something is starting to smell like a dead cat. It's coming from the rear left tire and there's remnant of fur.

Seriously, I'm glad everyone's problems got resolved. The 500 is really a great car, and nimble enough to take out the neighborhood feral.

Stuff like this should really not happen to new cars so frequently. The quality control on these vehicles does leave much to be desired.

I went to Fiat of Van Nuys today and they had loads of 500's sitting next to each other ...a very easy way to spot defects and what not in a line up that way.

Many of them had poor fitting front fenders, hoods and hood line gaps being uneven..severely some of them.

Come on....this is not acceptable...even my car has one side of the hood slightly higher than the other side!

Powerband.. Im sorry you had the inconvenience of going back to the dealer.. I hope they find what is in there...

I apologize for the treatment you received and the problems that were experienced. Im happy that it was resolved for you. Please PM me anytime there is an issue so to avoid any further frustrations. I will help any way I can.

Thanks, Jonathan. My dealer is more than half an hour away so by the time I drove all the way to them on the freeway they could no longer find the problem. There was only a hot burnt smell of meat and fur.
Well on the upside, at least is was a "smaller" critter. lol What I would have checked out however, is any possible damage to wires, etc.. if it was a rat or squirrel or mouse .. I hope they didnt eat part of the car.

Truly unacceptable service for a brand trying to make a comeback. VW pulled the same garbage when they "returned" or revived themselves. They treated people like crap, refused service, had some clear and defined issues they did no acknowledge....who are they trying to fool???

Given fragile Fiat's position is in this country and elsewhere, Fiat USA must be out of their minds to not address these issues quickly and professionally. I mean think about it...what an incredibly big deal they made out of helping you and look where it got them....you will never buy another Fiat again most likely.

Sad.

This is the major worry I have with this car....moreso than anything else. Many of my friends told me I'm out of my mind buying this car. We'll see if they are proven right or wrong. I don't want to spend a SINGLE minute at a dealership if I don't have to.

Sometimes I truly envy people who don't need to drive or need a car. Lucky them.

hi I have a smell of oil in my 1.2 500 lounge no leaks anywhere anyone have any ideas
smells more like gearbox oil but the smell is on the opposite side from the gearbox. its been on a ramp in a garage and nothing has been detected only started smelling after the service but definitely NO oil has been spilt on the manifold or anywhere on the engine

It's always worth checking where the PCV attaches to the camshaft cover. There is an o-ring there that can leak oily residue and combustion gasses... At least on the 1.4 engine.

Hey Mark, take a deep breath. It is often difficult to replicate a customer's problem. If it is a leak and the leak is external a UV dye test will usually find it. If they can't replicate the smell, and that is a very subjective test, how are they gonna fix it?

Really, just trade in your FIAT on a nice tan Corolla and be a happy man.
