Fiat and tire rotation

I went to Fiat today due to getting a warning light on my dash yesterday. It appears I was due for my first oil change (at approximately 10,200 miles). While there I found out I had two nails in my rear left tire (right where I had JUST gotten two nails two weeks ago...but thats another story). Since they don't do the patches for free I opted to head over to Discount Tire since they had just patched it the other week for me. On my way out I asked if they also did the tire rotation and was told they did a partial rotation and just moved them so the better tires were up front.

When I arrived at Discount Tire I explained the situation, and was told unfortunately since I already had two patches in there I could only safely get one more. Luckily for me tho it appeared one of the nails had fallen out and when he went to check the other one it seems it wasn't deep enough to penetrate the tire. He double checked the air pressure and said it was good, no change.

Now to my question.. when I explained what my dealership people said (partial rotation) he said he never heard of that and when he checked the depth of my tires told me it looked like they were never moved. Is this possible? When I was looking at my hub caps the front right is scratched and I could swear that's the one I always end up hitting on the curb. So do they keep those in the same spot, I'd think it'd be easier to just move the whole thing?

Also, the discount auto guy said I was supposed to have my tires rotated every 5,000 miles. Is that true? I get the three free oil changes and tire rotations. You would think they could have mentioned that on one of my weekly washes I get at the dealership.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I just wonder if I should do something to confirm that they actually did something rather than just using up one of my free tire rotations on a say so especially since another tire professional thinks differently. :)

I am not sure of the dealer's recommendations and if they differ from your tire store's advice, but I will be rotating mine shortly at a little over 15k miles. Maybe a bit late, but my tires are all wearing evenly and actually show only slight signs of wear right now. Everyone is different, however. Some people have had to get new tires within the same amount of miles as I have on mine right now.

When I was servicing Volkswagens, their tire rotation schedule is every 10,000 miles, it just depends on the manufacturer. Generally it is recommended to do tire rotations when you do oil changes (especially since most cars recommend 6K - 15K service intervals now). Fiat's recommendation is every 8K (unless it's changed) or when you notice wear. Me personally, I wouldn't do it more than every 5K miles or so unless I noticed uneven wear. Given how these cars tend to eat tires, I think the rotate every oil change route is a good one to follow.

As for what a "partial" rotate is, I'm not really sure what they meant by that - maybe they just moved tires on one side?

I have them rotate the tires at round 7500 on the 500 Pop which syncs up the oil changes. On the 500L I take it in every 4-5 months for a health check have them rotate the tires if needed. I am putting about 10K on 500L per year, but do mostly city driving so have want to have the tires checked more often than the oil changes.
