Wipers going crazy...

Recently i had to get my windshield replaced. long story short i got it back and now my wipers are all crazy. they'll go down and hit the cowl then go up about halfway. I've tried loosening them and reseting them and it keeps doing this. Car only has 600 miles so i find it hard to believe anythings actually broke? Any ideas before i take it back to the stealership?

I don't know if its possible but the connecting link between the two arms may have gone over center, or cam'd over beyond it's normal stopping point. So now they want to operate from park to a lower position. It may necessitate removal of the cowl and disconnection the linkage to correct. It seems I vaguely recall having seen a similar action on an older truck due to the plastic bushing being worn badly and connected to iced up wipers in the winter.

the more I think about it, I am almost sure that is what happened. Installer likely pressed down on the arms and forced the linkage over center, or they somehow hung up when you used them next and the motor forced the cam that operates the linkage to cam over.

Its a matter of unbolting the linkage and setting it back on the right side (then placing the arms on their shafts so they make the sweep as intended if you moved them from their original orientation). Now, I haven't had the fiat system apart but assume they are still the typical arrangement with a multi splined shaft that allows adjustability of the arms.

This is not specific to our car but should help you.

Was it the dealer that replaced the windshield?

It looks like the installer removed the wiper arms while not all the way down, then installed them in the lowest position. That's why they hit the cowl but don't go all the way up.

Simply remove the wiper arm and turn on the wipers then turn them off to reset the lower position and install the arms again.
